Abstract
The nature of every research project influences the type of research design adapted to
foster its process. A research design depends on the nature of the study and field or area of study
upon which a researcher seeks to investigate certain phenomena. In total, there are four types of
research designs that a researcher can adapt to aid the success of the study. The four types of
research design include an explanatory research design, experimental research design,
descriptive research design and diagnostic research design (Campbell & Stanley, 2015, p. 86). A
researcher is at liberty to choose from the four types of designs that suit the area of the study.
Mainly, appropriate research design leads to an efficient research outcome and more accurate
generalization of the survey. Therefore, researchers in criminal justice have the opportunity to
use any of the four types of research design depending on the phenomena involved in the project
area. As such, this review evaluates types of research designs about internal and external validity
factors, strength and limitations of experimental research designs, as well as summarizing
contemporary examples of experimental research in criminal justice field within the past ten
years.

Internal and External Validity
Internal and external validity is an integral part of the research process that researchers
depend on for decision-making or for deriving their finding. In any research, investigators tend to
manipulate some factors (the independent variable) and make a direct manipulation of
extraneous variables (Yin, 2013, p. 34). However, while trying to manipulate such variables, a
