It has been said that there is no such thing as a sustainable strategic advantage. Do you
agree? Why or why not?
One of the biggest advantage a business can have over its competitors is by adopting a
sustainable strategic/ competitive advantage. According to Tennyson, Ordóñez de Pablos, and
IGI (2013), sustainable competitive advantages are company assets, attributes, or abilities that
are difficult to duplicate or exceed; and provide a superior or favorable long-term position over
competitors. By developing sustainable strategic advantage, businesses are able to withstand
possible competition from their competitors even under extreme conditions. Over the years, there
has been a question whether a sustainable strategic advantage exists. This is a form of
competitive advantage which enables a business to withstand competition through its lifetime.
From my point of view, no point of investment or technology advancement can give a given
business a sustainable strategic advantage.
According to Kuncoro and Suriani (2017), competitive advantage is transient, not
sustainable in that it lasts only for a short period. With the advancement of technology,
businesses are able to easily copy idea and processes from their competitor enabling them to
duplicate similar offerings ending the rival’s competitive advantage. While a business can come
up with a new technology or formality which gives it some advantage, its competitors sooner or
later come to learn of such advancement enabling them to duplicate the same or develop more
advanced technologies and advancement which enable them to face competitors. In reality,
businesses cannot develop a sustainable strategic advantage by exploiting expertise and
technology as this can easily be copied. While businesses have attempted to enjoy a competitive
advantage through establishing barriers to entry to competitors, product differentiation, and
powerful branding, this has often proven to be temporary than sustainable.
