1.In order to sell more of bicycles at a lower prices, Z-Mart should understand and comply with the customs and tariff laws of the countries like France, Taiwan, and Philippines in which it plans to sell its products due to several reasons. Firstly, the enforcement of penalties for violating regulations can be severe to the extent to which they cannot sell the products anymore. In addition, it is important to acquire knowledge of customs because it affects the supply chain and operational structure of the company. Besides understanding the customs, Z-Mart should conduct a market research to analze the minimum local price of the bicycles so that the products could be sold in local areas.

2.Factors to be taken into consideration in determining whether to assemble the finished bicycles in the United States, Taiwan, or the Philippines.

Assembling is an important production activity and a cost head. There are several factors that need to be considered for the determination of location for assembling the finished bicycles.

The first and the foremost decision is regarding whether to make or buy – whether to make a new factory for assembly or purchase an existing factory. The decision will be influenced by the analysis of all variable and fixed costs and calculation of the break-even point.

If the decision is to make then all the 3 locations must be compared in terms of the following parameters in order to decide which one of these is most efficient. These parameters are

  1. Overhead Cost
  2. Production Cost
  3. Supplier Cost
  4. Quality of Suppliers
  5. Logistic costs associated with transporting and selling bicycles in various markets such as Europe and Americas
  6. Time required for shipping products from factory to the outlets
  7. Customs
  8. Taxes

Labor and other costs are generally in lesser developed countries such as Taiwan and Philippines (Remo, 2016) compared to those in the United States and hence it will make more sense to assemble the products in those countries. It is, therefore, necessary that all the pertinent factors are taken into consideration and detailed analysis be performed in order to arrive at the correct decision.

Case Analysis on the UNESCO Convention
Introduction
With the introduction of free trade, there emerged a threat of countries losing their
grip on their native languages and culture. The importation of foreign television programmes,
advertisements, films and lifestyle through the foreign media posed a threat to countries
which wanted to preserve their culture and language. This led to the adoption of the
Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, within
the framework of UNESCO. The treaty was negotiated from October 2005 and came into
force in March 2007. It was opposed by the US and Israel while four countries abstained. The
four countries are Australia, Liberia, Honduras and Nicaragua. (Chan, 2013). However, as
countries act to protect their cultures, the WTO’s rules have to be withheld.
One of the major objectives of the convention is to protect the cultural diversity of the
participants. It was also meant to protect developing countries from being manipulated by
developed countries. The cultural heritage of smaller linguistic and cultural regions had to be
preserved and assisted to fully exploitation. The agreement focuses on the threats and
opportunities that technical and economic development pose to the cultural diversity. It also
addresses the importance of international cooperation and its impact on world trade. (Smith,
2007).
. According to the 2001 universal declaration on cultural diversity, cultural
expressions are specified as expressions that arise from individuals, groups and societies and
have cultural content. Further, cultural content is described as symbolic meaning; artistic
dimensions and cultural values that arise from or express cultural identities. Culture material
is regarded as spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical features that are associated with a
particular social group. They include art, traditions among others. Hence it is fundamental for

countries through their membership status in UNESCO to protect these cultural expressions
and identities from extinction. Globalisation, which widely supports free trade, has been
evidently found to have led to extinction of some cultural content. As more states become
economically developed, the citizens are more exposed to foreign goods, services and the
values embedded in them and they alter their cultural beliefs.
Due to the threat posed to native cultures, it is apparent that limitation is important in
importation of foreign goods and services. As much as free trade mobilizes and empowers
people, it opens cultures to manipulation and extinction. In some countries, foreign songs,
movies, advertisements, shows among other audio-visual products are not free to trade. Some
countries have taken advantage of the GATT forth article which allows for screen quotas for
the minimum amount of domestic origin cinema to institute quotas for domestic film
exhibition (Bernia, 2003). This step to bar audio-visual products by some has been taken to
safeguard domestic producer. The ...
