Power and politics greatly influence an organization’s culture. In business, the culture can make or break an organization’s productivity. In this assignment, you’ll analyze the ways power and politics have influenced an organization’s culture. You’ll apply best practices you learned in course resources and your own research to make recommendations for improving this organization’s culture.

Preparation

Using the same organization from the first two assignments, imagine the CEO has now requested your task force investigate the influence of power and politics on the corporate culture. You have been asked to prepare a position paper that presents and supports your recommendations to improve the culture.

Prepare for this assignment by delving into the organization's culture and identifying the resources you, the task force leader, will use to create your research-supported position paper. Use at least two quality resources such as the course textbook, company website, business websites (CNBC, Bloomberg, etc.), resources from the Strayer Library, and/or outside sources. Note: Wikipedia and web-based blogs do not qualify as credible resources.

    Discuss the importance and complexity of leadership behavior. How does it influence organizational structure and performance?
  • Executive Summary
    Prepare an executive summary that presents your recommendations for ways in which the organization could build a stronger culture. Note: An executive summary is a condensed version of your full report. It should summarize briefly all the main points in concise paragraphs. It should be written clearly and should use language appropriate for the audience.

Introduction
Incorporated on December 13, 1985, Macy's Inc. is an omnichannel retail company
operating mobile applications, Web sites, and stores under three banners- Bloomingdale's,
Bluemercury's, and Macy's banners. Macy's Inc has been suffering from a major downfall,
(Cohen, 2017). In fact, its stock price has been diminishing for a while now. Its underlying
problem is the lack of bold leadership at the top. Macy's management is chiefly centered on
short-run profits rather than long-term gains. The management is not speculating on
experimenting and trying with new ideas and innovations.
Influence of politics and power
Power and politics play a very crucial role in organizations, from government how
employees interact with each other to how decisions are made. In organizations small and big,
the influence of power is dependent on whether the employees employ negative or positive
power to influence the other individuals in the working environment. Politics on the other hand
may directly impact who has the power and also determine whether the workplaces overall
culture encourages productivity.
Positive power in a firm is that with encourages productivity, (Said, 2002). This includes
giving the employees the power to make decisions, appointing employees who exhibit strong
performance to supervise the other employees, and even rewarding employees for their
outstanding and strong performance. Positive power motivates the employees to work harder and
also builds their confidence. It also results in those in higher hierarchy positions gaining power
via respect and communication instead of coercive efforts. There is a higher rate of employee

retention when these employees are given the power to work together and express their concerns
within the organization.
Negative power arises where the leadership team in a firm does not respect the employees
under them. Such a leadership team motivates employee performance by threatening them with
disciplinary actions such as job loss and other punishments. Such a leadership team may also
exhibit favoritism to particular employees rather than acknowledging the strong performance of
multiple employees. This kind of power results in a higher rate of employee turnover and also
decreased overall productivity.
Onto politics, the employees who learn to navigate organizational politics are usually a
lot more productive than the employees who are left out of the loop. Therefore, firms and
organizations should encourage productivity by developing a political culture that can be easily
