The justice system has been accused of gross injustices often based on race. Juries are an
integral part of the process, and despite claims and insistence on political correctness, biases and
stereotypes are still a problem in the courtrooms. Stereotypes affect people’s perceptions more
than we are willing to admit. We can form favorable or unfavorable impressions even without
being aware of it. Implicit biases affect people’s subconscious, despite being highly aware of
one’s biases one may not actually be able to point out implicit biases because they do not affect
the conscious mind. Furthermore, these biases are common to everyone, even individuals that are
committed to being impartial such as judges. As a result we judge people by their appearance,
race, and age among other physical characteristics. These biases are cultivated over a lifetime;
they depend largely on the environment we are exposed to, the kind of attitudes our caregivers
have as well as the TV programmers we watch and our experiences early on in life sha...
