SOWK 350 TRIAD: SELF-EVALUATION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS OVERVIEW For this assignment, you will demonstrate self-reflection and correction by watching your Triad: Final Session Assignment and writing a report of your preparation activities, assessment and intervention strategies, areas of strength, and needed improvements. You must indicate how you can use supervision and consultation to enhance your social work practice. INSTRUCTIONS This paper will be 4–5 pages, not including title/reference pages, and must include 3–4 sources in current APA format. The required sources must include course textbook(s) and journal article(s). Use of Bible verses is encouraged when used in proper context, but will not count as one of your 3–4 sources. 1. Watch your video interview and take notes on your role as a social worker. • Look for your active listening skills. • Look for non-verbals in your facial expressions, head nodding, minimal encouragers (“okay,” “wow,” “uh-hm”). • Do you occasionally re-phrase? • Are your questions open (facilitate more discussion) or closed (yes/no)? • How are you at exploring feelings? • Did you gain a good understanding of the issue by the end of the session? • How are your beginning, middle, and ending skills? • What did you do well? • What do you wish you had done differently? • Did you leave out anything? • What skills need work? 2. Begin your paper. It must include the following: a) An introduction of your group (first names) and of the overall process. b) Using your notes, write 2–3 pages about your observations. Ensure that all aspects of the session were covered. Your instructor is looking for detailed self-awareness as to strengths and areas to improve. This is not about your analysis of the client’s problem; it is about you as a worker. Seeing your mistakes (and strengths) is key to showing that you recognize areas for growth in yourself. c) Explain how supervision and consultation could have helped you in this interview. d) Discuss 1–2 possible interventions you could utilize if you had future sessions with the client. What kind of goals would you consider? Include a concept learned from your Triad: Journal Article Review Assignment. e) End the paper with a final paragraph giving your conclusions about the experience. I (Sahara) was the social worker in this session. Kionna was my client and Cynthia and Shannon Were the observers. The topic we discussed in this session was stress, balancing work, family and School. Kionna was very overwhelmed in this session when we were discussing her home life. She felt like she was doing a lot at home but it wasn’t being appreciated by her husband. We Discussed some coping skills and what she can do to get prioritized on some issues, we discussed how She doesn’t have to do everything. She’s human and just some things just aren’t going to get done in life. Kionna felt like as soon as she gets done with school, then her life will be much better. Her husband will Appreciate her more, her kids will be a little older, and then she will have an income to bring to the Table. Being the social worker for this session, has allowed me to see the importance of having active listening Skills and being able to ask the questions my client needed me to ask her. I am still working on not being Shy and being more open to people. So this was a learning experience for me. I asked the questions And did allow her to answer them, I just needed to listen more and speak slowly as the bible tells us In James 1:19 “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger” Some of the Pressing issues kionna was speaking on, I also was going through in my marriage. I wanted so badly To share but didn’t want to disclose to much of my personal journey. I have learned that social workers Who disclose personal information inappropriately can damage a client . I have also learned that I cant get Hung up on my feelings about receiving negative feedback from a client. Wondering how and what The client is thinking negatively about me. I have to just have to use the skills that I have been taught To use to become a successful social worker. Giving Kionna some self care tools can also help me in my Life with some coping skills. The supervision and consultation would have made me more nervous I think. Without them on the Camera I was comfortable. In my intensive class a couple of weeks ago, our professor was there but Turned her camera off, we knew she was there and we wanted to do a great job . Having her listen to Us was good but not seeing her was better. A intervention I would use with my client would be maybe asking more open-ended questions and Allowing her to take her time in answering them. Setting some goals she can accomplish to help Manage her stressors. In conclusion to my session , I need to realize that I am here to help her on her journey. I am there to listen and guide her to the resources and tools she needs. Being in this class has taught me to accept me For who I am. I am still learning and growing. I was to critical at first now I know that I will get more skills as I progress on. Referemce The Holy Bible (2011) New International Version Biblica, Inc. (Original publication 1973) Shulman, L. Introduction and Overall Process
Togetherness is the most significant aspect of achieving sustainable changes in social
work (Shulman, 2016). This was the third video I did with my group members: Cynthia,
Shannon, and Kionna. We all took part, being the social worker and the observer. I was the
social worker in this video, and Kionna was my client. Our discussion was on the stress of
balancing work, family, and school (full-time job, spouse, kids, and school, among others). I
was actively listening to Kionna, and I was displaying a form of professionalism. My voice
was calm and soothing. I asked Kionna some open-ended questions and gave her enough time
to answer. I ensured she was validated when discussing the stress in her home life. I
maintained eye contact with her and did much head nodding to let her know I was listening
and paying attention. Cynthia and Shannon believed the session went well. Kionna had much
to discuss and was very upset about how her husband treated her.
Observations
My active listening skills include maintaining good eye contact with the client, being
present in the conversation, effective listening, and reflecting on the conversation. During the
session, I was able to listen attentively to Kionna. She felt very comfortable disclosing her
personal life about how she felt like her husband did not appreciate her or make her feel like
she mattered. I used words like I understand and I laughed with her when she did. Also, I
informed Kionna that her life matters. I felt like she was validated by our session.
In reference to non-verbal facial expressions, head nodding, and minimal
encouragement, I used a lot of head noddin...
