Enactment of Marriage Equality Law
The gay population in the United States of America has increased tremendously in the
recent decades to due to the increased liberalization, and democratization in the United States of
America. This has, in turn, increased the crusades, debates, and agitations whose objectives is to
recognize the gay rights in the country. As noted by Helkitis (2012) however, the gay rights in the
USA have not been satisfactorily provided for, and protected by the existing laws. On June the
year 2011, the New York state passed a new law on marriage equality. This law was later adopted
by 7 other states including the District of Columbia.
The support on marriage equality by the officials of the state (including President Obama),
and legislatures was a recognition, and advancement of gay rights to marry, and step towards
reducing the spread of HIV/ AIDS among the gay community (Helkitis, 2012). Discrimination
indeed fuels the spread of HIV. As argued by Helkitis (2012), HIV/AIDS is simply not a
biochemical condition…it manifests itself in populations that are marginalized, and victimized,
populations with lower levels of social capital. Therefore, the enactment of this law will reduce
the marginalization of gay community hence reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS among them. The
