CONSORTIUM OF YOUNG WRITERS GLOBALLY The organization is a start-up called Global Young Writer (GYW). The purpose of GYP is to form a formidable consortium of young writers interested in poetry, short stories and inspirational books. The world population is estimated at 7 billion and more and more people are getting access to internet connectivity. GYW Value proposition GYW will be the world’s largest resource for poetry, short stories and inspirational books. GYW will provide a global platform for young writers by building a consortium of writing ecosystem that will include writers (content developers), editors, publishers and marketers. GYW will be a one stop shop for new writers and a diverse collection of global stories that never get coverage. Market size According to a Google research reported in Telegraph (2010) there are about 130 million books published in the world. The publishing business is reported to be declining comparing revenue in 2015 and 2016 (Milliot, 2017). Digital publishing in addition to printing on demand services on the other hand are on the increase. Amazon is the largest bookstore in the world with 2.5 million e-books, 10 million hardcover books and 28.8 million paperback books (Marc, 2015). The world population is growing and the need to read for entertainment is on the rise. In the next decade 50% of the world’s population will be in Asia and Africa. The changes in population demographics imply that the market for books both digital and electronic will be in Asia and Africa. PESTEL Scanning the operating Environment using PESTEL tool implies examining the political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal environment (PESTEL). PESTEL covers the business external environment to determine the suitability of the operating environment for investment. Political The world is becoming global and diversified. Trade restrictions are being eliminated by the advancement in technology and e-commerce are dictating the trends in business and enterprise. The publishing industry is becoming more liberalized to take advantage of the emerging opportunities. Economic With globalization inter-continental trade is becoming less restrictive. Tax regimes are becoming business friendly to attract investors. World Trade Organization and UNCTAD are addressing issues of double taxation. The world population is growing and books are needed in schools and homes. Social The world culture is becoming more diversified through education, intermarriage and travel. Global citizens are driving globalization. Global entrepreneurs like Bill Gates are joining hands to reduce global poverty through investments in health, education and social enterprises that create economic impact in the world while reducing global poverty. Technological The use of internet has improved how business is conducted. Today an author in Africa can publish his book and sell on Amazon without many restrictions. Print on demand is an innovation of printing smaller batches of books to pivot without tying up capital Environmental The concern on the environmental protection has created a secondary market for used books. E-books also contribute to environmental protection. Legal-legislation Countries and international bodies have created friendly legislation to promote international trade, movement of labor and the use of human resources outsourcing services. SWOT Analysis (EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT) External Environment (Opportunities and Threats) The opportunities available for GYW is the growing world population especially in Asia and Africa where it intends to invest and built a network of partners. Technological resources like print on demand enables smaller batches to be printed and availed in the market thus releasing valuable capital for operations rather than inventory. There is faster turnaround time for orders using technology. Rise in e-commerce and efficient logistics is favorable for publishing and distribution of books. The use of e-books that can be accessed using laptops, computers and smart phones is a large opportunity for the future of books. Threats The declining book publishing business is a threat. Book piracy especially with the ebooks is a major challenge. Having business partners through an ecosystem of writers, editors and publishers will tame piracy. Internal Environment Strength GYW has a battery of passionate young writers that are social media savvy would help popularize our books collections. Our writers are available all over the world thus collecting stories and manuscripts are not difficult using technology. Translation of works is another viable business opportunity. Weakness GYW is a start-up with limited financial base compared to Amazon and other established publishing houses. GYW will use technology to overcome its financial limitations and take advantage of the large potential creative young writers to grow its brand. The Industry operating Environment The publishing industry is declining while the e-publishing is developing. The publishing industry is shifting towards specific content and companies will be able to sell sections of books instead of the whole book. The growth of the logistics and distribution in e-commerce is a lifeline to book publishers. Collaboration with other service suppliers and partner organizations will revolutionize the way book business and publishing is done. The growing business opportunities in Asia and Africa call for a deliberate investment in the future of business by having a stronger presence in Africa and Asia supported with the changing world demographics. As the Caucasians populations are declining and the populations of the first world countries in regards to markets there is need to realign business with future demographic opportunities of rising middle class in Asia and Africa. Technological changes support revolutionary companies that are agile to rising business opportunities. The populations in Africa and Asia are on the rise. Africa is gifted with rich history in storytelling and entertainment. Books from all over the world will create opportunities for new movies and entertainment. Conclusion Scanning the operating Environment using PESTEL tool implies examining the political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal environment. It covers the business external environment to determine the suitability of the operating environment for investment.
