In the United States, the correctional system is overcrowded. The large population of
prisoners includes people of different ages, races, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Some prison populations have special needs, including people suffering from mental illnesses or
substance abuse. The purpose of the present paper is to review the needs of special populations
within the prison system and discuss a program that is meant to assess those needs.

Prisoners with special needs are those who have unique characteristics that put them in
need of special services that are not required by the rest of the population. For example, someone
suffering from mental illness can need medication or psychotherapy that is not required by most
prisoners. Some prisoners with mental illnesses also require constant supervision and may be
more vulnerable to abuses from other groups of prisoners. Prisoners that suffer from substance
abuse are another common type of inmates with special needs, as they can experience
withdrawal symptoms that require urgent care as well as behavioral problems associated with
drug consumptions (Hellenbach, Karatzias & Brown, 2017).
