According to Pugh (1991), “Total design is an integrated approach to product
engineering using a systematic and disciplined process to create innovative products that satisfy
customer needs” (p2). The approach encompasses identification of the market or user need
until selling of the produced product to satisfy human needs. Moreover, processes, people as
well as organization as are employed during the total design process. A mechanical designer
should be able to recognize mechanical systems, by applying various principles in engineering.
In order to perform competent mechanical design, a designer should have various skills that
are required to complete the task. Additionally, a designer should be able to integrate individual
machine elements to form a more comprehensive mechanical system. Additionally, the main
elements of a product relegalization process are essential for designers. More importantly, he
or she should be able to use the US customary Unit System as well as SI metric unit. Knowledge
of force and mass are vital in machine design, and thus a designer should be able to express
both in a unit system. The designer also should be able to present design calculations in a
manner that is professional, neat as well as orderly (Mott, 2004).
When designing a mechanical process, it is important to come up with a product that
aims at satisfying customer needs. Additionally, the designed product should be safe, efficient,
reliable, economical as well as practical to manufacture. Thus, it is essential to consider the
customer or the user of the product during the designing process. Customers include the
manufacturing engineer responsible for the production operations, as well as maintenance
personnel for the product, should be considered during total design activity.
The design should also be considerate of the operators of the machine or the process.
Therefore, a mechanical designer should be aware of the desires and expectations of the
customers before starting on the design process. If a need arises, a designer can use marketing

as a brief. It can be a simple statement or comprehensive documentation describing the true
requirements and needs of the end user. It is essential for designers to understand that for the
