Question description

  1. Choose an urban myth that is a solid mixture of reliable and unreliable sources, facts, half-truths, assumptions, fallacies, etc., a virtual treasure trove of critical thinking issues.
  2. Gather as many sources as possible and thoroughly evaluate them so that you become an “expert” on the topic and all the strengths and weaknesses, contradictions, etc., of the sources.
  3. Understand the historical arc of the myth: the creation, proliferation, and variations of it.
  4. Begin your inferential analysis. That is, begin making “conclusions about the unknown, based on the known.” The “known” is all the information: good sources, bad sources, and everything in between. The “unknown” is what you think the “known” suggests about how we as humans function in a world of media (everything from word-of-mouth to Twitter) and why we tend to think so uncritically.
  5. Your essay should answer this question: What does your critical analysis of the urban myth suggest about how and why we tend to not think critically in the media environment?

  • 4 full pages, maximum of 5
  • Minimum of 4 outside sources
  • Include the language of critical thinking such as hidden assumptions, fallacies, ethos, pathos, and euphemistic language.

Carrots and Eye Sight

Introduction
Carrots have been associated with an improved eyesight. Generations after generations
have been encouraged to consume carrots and it has become a common myth that is accepted
globally. Carrots are among the riches vegetables in vitamin A which in any case has been
proven important in healthy eyesight, development of the skin and creating a strong immune
system. However, it is yet to be established if eating this vegetable has any role in improving
vision. Seemingly, the association of carrot and eyesight might is a perception that has been
passed on from one generation to another without any concrete scientific evidence. This myth
emerged from the Second World War, where the Britons military spread the rumors that carrots
assisted their pilots in seeing the German bombers that were attacking at night. This was later
identified as a propaganda that was meant to cover the successful military tactics of these
combats, which was the Airborne Interception Radar (Maron, 2014). This system intercepted the
enemies’ bombers prior to their landing at the English Channel, and therefore, the myth of carrot
improving vision was meant to confuse the German enemies and protect their technique. The
British Intelligence did not want their enemy to find out their new technique and therefore
created the rumors. This information spread rapidly that the Republic of English believed and
started eating carrots with an aim of finding out their way especially at night or during a
blackout.
Analysis of the Myth

conditions, carrots improve eyesight (Maron, 2014). The human body makes the use of betacarotene to make vitamin A, which is, in fact, essential in improving eyesight. This vitamin is
important in helping the eyes in the process of converting light energy into signals, which are
