According to the text, in 2011 there were 83,000 reports of forcible rape reported to the police department and this means for every 100,000 females there will be 53 offenses (Doerner &Lab, 2015). There are many types of rape which include people on dates, acquaintances, and campuses. There are also many rapes that happen when women are intoxicated or on drugs (Mangan, 2015). This can cause these women to feel ashamed from being labeled and many times do not report the rape. There are also time in which the rapist may be someone with power such as a professor, football team leader, or even the school doctor (like in the recent case in which the doctor raped many girls who were in sports). These girls were confused, under age, and scared of what would happen if they spoke up. It also takes great courage to be able to speak up after a dehumanizing act against yourself and who you are as a person. Reporting rape does not stop there, next comes all the law enforcement investigations, maybe even medical examination, and facing the rapist in court. Another problem is when the crime goes unreported. The criminal could strike again and this could be detrimental to the next victim. In many schools there are counselors that could help with these kind of situations, but many times it takes more than this to be able to help someone who has gone through rape. Sometimes it takes protecting the victim from the person who committed the crime. There are occasions in which this person will get away easy due to lack of proof or due to a judge thinking it may cause the rapist trauma to be in a prison. By assuring the victim peace there will need to be many therapy sessions and assurance that that person will never step foot near her.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) one woman in five will be sexually assaulted while attending college. One in sixteen men have also to have been reported as having been sexually assaulted. Approximately ninety percent of those assaulted while attending college in actuality do not report the crime. At one college campus it was estimated that “63.3%” of males that reported they had committed such a crime admitted to repeating the crime of rape and or sexual assault. (NSVRC, 2015)

It has been made clear that while a student is within one of their facilities college leaders are ethically bound to maintain proper processes when a student reports a sexual assault crime and adhere to policies instituted by The American Association of University Professors. It has been noted that “the freedom to teach and learn is inseparable” in a “learning environment.” (Campus Sexual Assault: Suggested Policies and Procedures, n.d.)

The above mentioned article goes on to explain that the reporting of sexual assault/rape crimes are still considerably low as is the conviction rates of perpetrators given all of the advancements that have been made in making it easier for those that have been assaulted to approach leadership within colleges. Many are afraid of the stigmatism that comes with being a victim of sexual assault and the backlash they receive from fellow learners and the community leaving them to feel as if they were not being taken seriously. (Campus Sexual Assault: Suggested Policies and Procedures, n.d.)

Many colleges face the challenge of under reporting of the crime and marring the universities reputation. Generally if the perpetrators participate in sports on campus the colleges are less likely to want to report the crime to authorities as well.

Recommendations to higher learning facilities would be to have persons that have no affiliation with the school as part of the investigational procedures therefore less likely to be biased in the matter.
