Analysis of “Ghosts” by Henrik Ibsen
Introduction
The Alving’s estate, Rosenvold is located on Norway’s west coast. The play is set in
Norway during the 19th century a time when Victorian rap was at its climax; individual
reputation was highly regarded, divorce was unacceptable as indicated when the pastor returns
Mrs. Alving to her husband after she tries running away to him a year after her marriage, as well
as the notion of keeping one’s business and family dramas to themselves. All action occurs in the
same place; the enormous garden-room that has three doors leading to the garden, upstairs, as
well as to the kitchen (Ibsen 1-5). The play is a family drama, realism, and tragedy that explores
family values of the 19th century and uses realism concepts whereby people and events in life are
depicted as they occur. Mrs. Alving the tragic hero attempts to protect her son from his father’s
flaws and corruption but fails miserably as he is diagnosed with the ‘spiritual illness’ that killed
his father. It is a realistic contemporary drama that makes problems in the society questionable
and presents events as they occur in people’s everyday life. The play has a climatic structure
whereby the characters choices are minimized and are reduced by societal forces. The play has
an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution characteristic of climatic
structure in plays.
