PATIENTS’ SAFETY

2
Introduction

Patient’s safety is very key and vital in every health and medical care organization.
Safety to the patients does not only mean safety while at the hospital but also when they have
been discharged to recover at their homes. Over the years, according to a case study report
carried out by the NCIB and released in July 2017, patient’s safety brings about costs reduction
if done appropriately. Therefore in as far as patient’s safety is concerned, this paper is going to
look vividly into the ways in which the patient’s safety measures can lead to cost savings. It will
also look at the role of the Joint Commission in healthcare. It will as well look at the role of the
chief nursing officer regarding patient safety and the role of a nurse in healthcare and how he or
she can contribute to patient safety.
In accordance with the objectives of this module, by the end this paper, one should be
able to explain how error management can produce cost savings for the healthcare organization
and the concerns from regulatory agencies. One should also be able to know how to apply
various leadership techniques into the nursing field.
How Patient’s Safety Measures can lead to Cost Savings
First of all, in order to know how these measures can lead to cost savings, we need to
know which type of patient’s safety measures are they and how they bring about cost savings
when effected. One of the major safety measures that are usually practiced is ensuring that the
hospital is spotlessly clean so as to prevent any patient from contracting other unhygienic related
diseases (Katz, M. 2014).
If they, however, contract them, they will be severely ill and as for the case of the elderly,
they might be forced to be taken to the special internal care unit where special treatments need to

be done. This will then incur more costs to the hospital since the patient is not obligated to pay
the hospital to be treated for a disease he got due to the carelessness of the hospital. However, if
this is ensured that it does not happen, then savings in costs will be realized.
Katz, M. (2014) records that patients safety is basically about working hard toward
reducing and even ...
