USH U3 Portfolio Directions Your Unit 3 Portfolio on US immigration in the late 1800’s has TWO options for you to choose from (A or B). Option A consists of a storyboard in which you must detail the “Immigrant’s Experience” to the United States (similar to the directions given in your Connexus lesson). Option B requires an analysis of a political cartoon and the completion of 5 questions (answered in complete sentences) with a final reflection written in 2 paragraphs (5-7 sentences each). You must choose only ONE of these options. Detailed directions are provided below: U3 Portfolio (A): Immigrants Experience For this project, you will make a storyboard that tells the experiences of an immigrant to the United States. A storyboard tells a story through words and pictures, using frames like a comic strip or comic book. You will be turning in a PowerPoint “comic” tracing the experience of an immigrant from their country of origin to America. Your character’s country of origin must be in Europe or Asia. The word “storyboard” is just another way to say “comic”. Each PowerPoint slide is 1 panel. You need to have 10 panels, include your title panel (panel 1) or your sources panel (panel 10). ** Please note: you do not have to do a PowerPoint for this assignment. If you chose to complete this assignment in another format, just make sure you have all the required information. Use the suggested layout below as a guideline ** Follow the directions provided in the lesson – also attached to the thread Unit 3 Portfolio on the message board. It gives you resources to find information, question to ask, and other important information. Note – this part is required and not just a suggestion: Yes, you are creating a character, but it needs to be based on reality and your character must be from a country within Europe or Asia. Your storyboard must be historically accurate; you can’t say that they flew to America because that was not an option in the late 1800s – early 1900s. If they are from Ireland, you can’t make up a reason why they left that does not pertain to real issues in Ireland during that time, etc. This is where your research comes in. Below are recommended sources to help you complete your research: - Grolier Encyclopedia – on Connexus homepage under links - Your Textbook pages 464-469 - http://ocp.hul.harvard.edu/immigration/ - http://www.pbs.org/becomingamerican/aboutprograms.html - http://www.history.com/topics/ellis-island Remember to have fun and be creative! Here is my suggestion for how to organize your PowerPoint comic You can answer these questions as you do research, but do not just have answers to questions in your comic – make it like a comic with conversation/thought bubbles/etc. Panel 1 – Your name, class, date, and title of comic Panel 2 – Bio page of your character. Name, age, where they live, what year it is, etc. • Include Picture(s) Panel 7 – Settling in to life • Where did they settle? • What was their living situation like? • How were people from their country generally Panel 3 – Country of Origin - Where are they from? treated? • Ireland, Germany, Japan, China, Poland, Italy, • What difficulties might they face in their new Scotland country? • What are the conditions of that country? • Include Picture(s) • Why are they leaving? Famine, war, political issues, etc. You need to base this on facts Panel 8 – Work • Include picture(s) • What kinds of jobs were available to them? • What barriers to jobs does your character have? Panel 4 – Journey – start of journey • Include Picture(s) • How did they come to America? • • • Where did they leave from? What did they bring with them Include Picture(s) Panel 5 – Journey – on the journey • What was life like during the journey? • How did your character travel? • How long was the journey? • Include Picture(s) Panel 6 – Arrival/Processing • Where did they arrive? • How were they received by people already in America? • How were they processed? • Include Picture(s) Panel 9 – Wrap up • You can summarize here, add your own commentary, etc. • You can do a “fast forward” a few years to tell us where your character is now, or maybe generations later where their children or grandchildren might be • Include Picture(s) Panel 10 – Sources • List your sources here. You can just copy/paste links to the sites that you used. • Remember – no Wikipedia! • Approved Sources: -Grolier Encyclopedia – on Connexus homepage under links -Your Textbook pages 464-469 -http://ocp.hul.harvard.edu/immigration/ - http://www.pbs.org/becomingamerican/aboutprograms.html -http://www.history.com/topics/ellis-island U3 Portfolio (B): American Immigrants Political Cartoon Using the Political Cartoon below, answer the following 5 questions in complete sentences and with sufficient detail. Then, write your final Reflection describing what you have learned from this unit and what you have identified from the cartoon above in 2 paragraphs (5-7 sentences each). placards they are holding.
2. Who is the tall man on the left? How do you know?
The tall man represents the American working industry that perceives the immigrant as a source
of cheap labor to help America grow. This is depicted by the placard he is holding and the
