Introduction
Sociology is defined as the scientific study of the society which includes social
interactions, culture, and social relationships. The term was coined by Auguste Comte in the
1830s after he made a proposal on synthetic science that united all existing knowledge about
activities by human beings. Sociologists in this field study everything that concerns human
beings which range from interactions between two people to more complex ones such as with
other nations or multinational corporations. Sociology believes that actions taken by humans are
patterned, but there is always a room for other choices that can be made. As the society is faced
with many challenges, understanding social processes that influence how people think, feel and
behave helps shape the society. In this text, I will discuss the origins of sociology, factors that
contributed to the emergence of sociology and the three main theoretical perspectives in
sociology.
Origins of Sociology and the Father of Sociology
As mentioned earlier, the term sociology was first used by Auguste Comte, a French
philosopher, in 1838. Comte identified the need to have a systematic and scientific study of
societies (Howard, 2015). The philosopher proposed the theory of positivism to understand
societies better. The approach views the community as a result of three stages of historical
development. The stages include; theological, metaphysical and scientific stage. The theological
stage was based on the belief of things with reference to supernatural beings. The stage deals
with humans accepting the doctrine of God. The metaphysical stage was described as the phase
since enlightenment which was steeped with rationalism to the period when the French
Revolution ended. The final stage is the scientific stage where individual rights became more

the idea that one person has the power or autonomy over the others.
