GROUP MODELS

2

Substance abuse treatment professionals at the community mental health center employ
varied group treatment models to meet the needs of various clients during their treatment
process. The various groups used in the facility are a permutation of group goals and
methodology that define each group model. The group models used in the facility include:
Psycho-educational groups, Cognitive–behavioral/problem solving groups, Skills development
groups, Support groups, Interpersonal process groups. These groups have proven effective over
the years in the treatment and intervention of clients with various substance abuse problems.
Each of these group models offered in the facility have something unique to offer to certain
populations and with the help of our skilled professionals, the groups provide powerful
therapeutic experience to various group members (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, 2005).
For the purposes of my presentation, I will provide a detailed overview of two of these group
models that are commonly employed by our substance abuse professionals and demonstrate their
effectiveness as substance abuse interventions.
Psycho-educational groups
Psycho-educational groups are utilized in the center to provide clients with education
about substance abuse. The groups also help the clients understand behaviors related to substance
abuse and the associated consequences. The groups are well-structured and provide content
specific to the group. Frequently, the clients are taught using lectures, videotapes, or in other
cases audiocassettes. An experience counselor in the center facilitates discussions of the content
covered in the group. The groups provide information that directly impacts the lives of the
clients- provide options for change, instill client self awareness, indicate community resources
that can help the client’s recovery, widen comprehension of the change process, and prompt the
clients to act on their substance abuse habits through actions such as initiating a treatment plan.
