APA Research Essay The final essay of the semester will be a multi-source (8 sources minimum) persuasive essay that will be 8 to 10 pages double-spaced (minimum). The topic of this essay may either be a subject that has previously been discussed in class, or a subject of your own choosing that has been approved beforehand (see below for a list of unapproved topics). You are being asked to compose an essay in which you will articulate a clear, authoritative argument regarding your subject and you will defend your argument with your research by incorporating secondary evidence to support your claims. Any research that you highlight in your paper should be used with the express purpose of supporting your argument and winning over the reader. Therefore, you must be selective with regards to the research you rely on when it comes to this type of essay as the audience will pay close attention not only to the details of each quote from or summary of a piece of research, but also to how recent the information is, and the credibility of each source. Part of your argument must include valid reasoning as to why your choice of topic merits the attention and consideration of the audience. In other words, appeal to your audience. Write an essay for yourself, but never let the reader stray far from your thoughts. You should not think of this as an assignment. Tell yourself that this is a professional piece of writing to be read by the general audience. NOTE – This is not a history paper. Therefore, do not waste space relaying important dates in history. This assignment has been broken up into multiple assignments over the course of the semester: 1.) Five (5) Research worksheets (10 points each) – These assignments will consist of: Finding credible research, annotating your research, and filling out an accompanying worksheet. 2.) Detailed sentence outline (100 points) – A detailed outline of your entire research paper must include: a.) A clear thesis statement b.) Clear topic sentences for each section of the body c.) All research – exact quotes in their entirety, summaries, statistics, etc. – that will be incorporated into the final text. Proper APA citations should follow each piece of research. Do not neglect to include the opposing view Class time has been set aside for students to help each other with the development of this assignment. 3.) APA references page (50 points) – a listing of each of the eight sources (two of which must represent the opposing view – one of which must be some form of multimedia) you intend to use in your research essay. 4.) Final Draft of the Research Paper (100 points) – Typed 12 point font, formatted according to APA guidelines) The APA persuasive essay unit is 30% of your final grade. NOTE: • Research materials must be current, and may not have been published prior to 2013. • All research must come from a variety of sources – diversify the types of research you consult for your essay. Out of the eight pieces of research, you are required to incorporate one piece of multimedia. Topics Deemed Unacceptable: • Abortion • 2nd Amendment • Steroids and sports • Raising or lowering the drinking age • Stem cell research • Paying college athletes
