Performance Management in Organizations

Description

Case Study Laura Schultz:

Laura Schulz has operated Laura's Sweet Stuff Bakery for the past 5 years. By 5:00 a.m. every weekday morning, customers are dropping in both to enjoy the cozy smells and to purchase fresh warm donuts and other goodies to enjoy with their coffee before going to work. After 5 years of this schedule where she began baking by 3:00 a.m., Laura is very tired.

Laura has decided to hire an apprentice baker and a cashier to provide early morning counter help. She knows that she must stop treating her bakery as an extension of herself and begin operating a business. She has a friend with an MBA who told her to establish a performance measurement system so that she can tell whether her two new employees are good employees or not.

It all seems so complicated. Laura has contacted the local Business School Co-op Program and asked for advice. Your professor assigned you to answer Laura's questions for 20 percent of your grade. When you meet with Laura, she tells you that she will need you to explain with examples related to her bakery "because I'm not good at theory." She presents you with the following questions:

(Minimum of 750 words for each question, this excludes the reference section at the bottom from your word count. You are also required to use a minimum of FOUR scholarly external sources references. Use proper APA guidelines, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication in your in-text reference, but APA guidelines encourage you to also provide the page number.

1. Describe performance, and how does this term relate to Laura’s employees work standards?

2. Discuss two measurement systems Laura can use to establish standards of performance in the bakery.

1. Describe performance, and how does this term relate to Laura's employee's work
standards?
When an employer like Laura Schulz employs an employee, she expects that the
employee will be able to deliver on their assigned duties and responsibilities. Performance is
defined as the ability to fulfil assigned tasks in a way that will not cause conflict between the
person doing the task and the person who assigned the tasks. Employee performance is used
to define the ability of an employee to accomplish the duties and responsibilities in a
satisfactory manner. The performance of an employee plays a key role in the success of an
organization and in the case of the bakery owned by Laura, the continued success of the
bakery will be determined by how well the two new employees perform at work (Cascio,
2018). Laura has been running Laura’s Sweet Stuff Bakery alone successfully for five years.
In those five years, she was able to start baking at 3:00 am in order to have her products ready
for her customers who start coming in at 5:00 am. Laura’s Sweet Stuff Bakery has been
successful because she has been able to serve her customers well by ensuring that by the time
they come to the baker, fresh goodies like fresh warm donuts and several others are ready.
She already has set personal work standards and it is important for her new employee can
also follow in her footsteps.
Most bakeries rely on their loyal clients who love the quality products that they get
when they come to the bakery. In the case of Laura’s Sweet Stuff Bakery, the employee
should be able to bake according to the standards that she has set. The employee should be
ready to be trained by Laura and show a willingness to learn in order to be able to bake
quality goodies the same way Laura does. An employee who will able to match Laura’s
standards will be able to bake quality products even without supervision (Anitha, 2014).
