Death Sentence for a Virus? Should we KEEP or KILL the smallpox virus research stockpiles? The last known naturally occurring case of smallpox occurred in 1977. A world-wide vaccination effort lead to the natural eradication of the disease—a viral condition that causes painful “pustules” to appear over a person’s body—and the scientific world considered it to be the first great human victory against viruses. While the virus appears to have been eradicated from the natural world, small stockpiles of viral cultures have been maintained since the ‘70’s at the Center’s for Disease Control (CDC) research lab in Atlanta, GA, USA, and at a research lab in Russia. While these stockpiles exist, the virus itself still exists. Your question: Should we KEEP or KILL these last remnants of the smallpox virus? You can use the t-chart below to guide your discussion and thoughts as you read through the articles on the history and effects of the smallpox virus and the positives and negatives of having the virus available in research labs. You do not need to turn this paper in! Your dilemma discussion should be 2-3 typed, double spaced pages. Use APA format. Length is not as important as content. I want to know what you think and why. Provide examples from the readings to support your thoughts! You may use additional sources so long as you cite them. Sources: • http://www.who.int/csr/disease/smallpox/faq/en/ • http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v469/n7330/full/469265a.html • http://healthland.time.com/2011/05/18/should-we-destroy-the-last-of-the-worlds-smallpox-virus/ • http://www.scidev.net/global/health/editorials/let-s-get-rid-of-smallpox-for-good-1.html Dilemma Discussion Papers Length: 2-3 pages typed, double spaced For each paper, read the provided prompt and review the attached source list. You may use additional sources, but remember to gauge the credibility of your source and include all sources used in your works cited at the end of the paper. Keep in mind that our class lectures do count as sources and should be cited in your works cited. Your response should be in standard written form and in it, you need to choose a side of the issue that you most agree with and explain why. Do not list. Use paragraphs. For each dilemma, start by reviewing the listed materials for the topic. Each topic will require you to choose a “side” of the dilemma and argue in support of that side, so as you read, take notes. Many students find that T-charts are good for note taking on dilemma issues. Once you have reviewed all of the materials, discuss them with your partners. Even if you choose to write your own paper, discussing the material with a few other people will be helpful and is highly encouraged as a way to broaden your own thoughts on the matter. Which side of the issue do you stand on? Why? Explain your thoughts. Keep in mind that some of these topics can be very emotional for people, so be sensitive when speaking with and questioning the people in your group. Seek to understand their feelings, even if they don’t match yours! You may use the writing guides to help frame your response, but these should not be turned in. Your response MUST BE a written paper of 2-3 pages. Each dilemma topic will be available after the final lecture for that unit. You will be given one class day to work on the assignment with your group—these dates are noted on your course calendar. The paper will be due no later than one week from the in-class work day. So for example, if your in-class work day is on Tuesday, January 30, the assignment will be due the following Tuesday, February 1. Due dates will also be discussed and announced in class. If you are not in class, it is your responsibility to find out what was missed or to check the syllabus for up and coming assignments.

Smallpox is a disease that is caused by the variola virus. This ancient disease was one of
the world feared disease and claimed a lot of lives especially in the developing nations. The
disease is said to have originated in Africa before spreading to other parts of the world. High
fever and fatigue are some of the signs of the disease. Smallpox was declared eradicated in the
year 1979. This paper, therefore, will argue that the last remnants of smallpox virus should be
killed.
After the year 1979 when smallpox was declared officially to have been eradicated, there
was an agreement that was reached that the stocks of the virus which remained to be killed or be
passed to a safer laboratory. T...
