Introduction
Various statutes assert that criminals or offenders should be punished for their wrongs
to teach them lessons and to prevent other people from doing the same crimes. The acts also
tend to promote law and order in the society. Such is the reason behind the existence of jails,
as in some decades ago there was no homogenous template for punishment in different
communities, leaving every community with its unique ways of enforcing the law on its
people.
History of punishment
According to Farrington (1996), the history of punishment for offenders started off as
a banishment of the lawbreaker to exile. The expulsion was either on a temporary or
permanent basis. The form of punishment then moved from banishment to bastinado, which
was most dominant in Asia and involved the use of a stick to beat the soles of one’s feet. The
move would inflict pain since soles were believed to be painful and delicate hence the
individual would feel punished. Different parts of the world had dissimilar modes of
punishment that evolved.
For instance, branding with a hot iron was common in Britain until when it was
banned in 1829. Boiling alive was also a punishment used in England while France and
Germany used broken on the wheel where the offender was tied to a wheel, and the arms
