Patient safety is fundamental aspects of healthcare and healthcare professionals are
tasked with the responsibility of ensuring high-quality healthcare while maintaining patient
safety standards. Patient safety, in essence, refers to the prevention of harm to the patient by
ensuring that high-quality health care is granted to the patients. In the patient safety standards,
the emphasis is placed on the system of care delivery that minimizes errors, learning from the
errors that occur and building a culture of safety that involves healthcare professionals, patients,
and the healthcare organization (Milstead, 2004). In this case, it is essential that healthcare
professionals share a common understanding of patient safety standards and practice to minimize
risks and other medical errors that may undermine the concept of patient safety within the
healthcare facility. Today, many patient safety practices and standards such as the use of
computerized physician order entry, crew resource management, simulation, and barcode
management have been devised and are considered as essential strategies to minimize risks and
ensure patient safety (Milstead, 2004). The healthcare professionals must share the
understanding of these strategies to ensure patient safety within the healthcare environment.
Preventing errors and improving patient safety is first and foremost a critical aspect of
