Description

Write an essay (1,500-1,750 words) on special interest groups (SIG).

Develop an argument for creating an SIG for an issue which is important to you, or describe one to which you already belong.

Discuss the tactics and strategies your interest group would use (or uses) to help influence legislative outcomes and public opinion.

Briefly discuss the issues your SIG would address (or addresses). Are they local, state, or federal issues? Is your group advocating for or against these issues?

Do you see any "down side" to SIGs, or is it smart politics to be proactively engaged in the process?

Provide a minimum of three to five scholarly sources to support your analysis.

Special interest groups

The term special interest group refers to any community within a larger organization in
which the members share specific concerns and interests related to a given area of specialization
and seek to influence the government on policies that affect these concerns. Special groups play
an essential role in enhancing public involvement in the policy development process. The power
to advocate and influence lawmakers is essential to addressing key public concerns and ensure
policies address the needs of these groups. Special interests groups are a powerful approach to
influencing policies in the country, but they also have an adverse influence on the democratic
process.
Argument for creating a special interest group (SIG)
The environment has experienced increased pollution from industrial activities across the
country and other human-related activities, and this identifies the need to develop the American
Environmental Conservation Association aimed at developing policies that address this negative
trend. The degradation of the American environment can be defined as a contribution of
executive changes and aggressive lobbying by the industries for further deregulation (Popovich,
Albeck-Ripka & Pierre-Louis, 2018). The Trump Administration has been engaged in extensive
deregulation of environmental protections, and this identifies the need to develop a special
interests groups specifically dedicated to protecting the American environment from industrial
initiatives that may be harmful to it. Examples of deregulation under the Trump administration
that have a negative influence on the environment include the lifting of the freeze on new coal
leases, rejecting a proposed ban on potential harmful pesticides and repealing a ban on offshore
drilling of oil and gas in the Arctic and Atlantic oceans (Popovich et al., 2018). Additionally, a
measure such as the proposed use of seismic air guns and the withdrawal of guidance forcing

industries to include greenhouse gas emission when providing environmental reviews further
identify the need for greater protections to address these environmental problems (Popovich et
al., 2018).
Additionally, the continued denial of climate change has led to the continued destruction
of the environment as more companies seek to exploit the environment with little concern on the
influence the activities have on the environment (Popovich et al., 2018). The Environmental
Protestation Agency that has been charged with safeguarding the environment is currently
headed by an individual opposed to its existence that is Scott Pruitt (Popovich et al., 2018).
Additionally, the EPA has rolled back over one-thirds of its environmental protections
identifying the needed to develop and push for new environmental laws at the state and federal
levels. The continued disregard for the environment has limited the presence of environmental
protection as an issue of public importance. Issues relating to the environment have received
limited attention when it comes to public agendas that need to be addressed (Popovich et al.,
2018). Agendas such as national security, healthcare, and immigration have taken center stage in
the political environment today and thus r...
