I. Introduction A. Death B. Background: What is death? Death is the cessation of the connection between our mind and our body. Most people believe that death takes place when the heart stops beating; but this does not mean that the person has died, because his subtle mind may still remain in his body. Death occurs when the subtle consciousness finally leaves the body to go to the next life. Our body is like a guesthouse and our mind like the guest; when we die our mind has to leave this body and enter the body of our next rebirth, like a guest leaving one guesthouse and travelling to another. C. Thesis: To grasp the idea of death and how sudden it can occur is mind boggling, within the two short stories we will discuss just how quickly death can come upon us. D. Edgar Allan Poe E. The theme of death
Death is the termination of the link between the mind and the body. It is widely believed
that death occurs at the moment the heart stops beating, but according to the definition of death
herein used stopping of the heartbeat does not necessarily mean is dead because the mind and the
body may still be together. Consequently, one dies when the mind leaves the body for another life.
Analogically, the body is like a guesthouse and the mind is the guest and hence just like the guest
leaves one guesthouse for another so does the mind leaves the body when death occurs. It is
baffling to understand death and how sudden it occurs and most people would rather not think
about it. The following short stories will help in understanding the abruptness and inevitability of
death.
Edgar Allan Poe

of the pioneers of romanticism in America. His literary works have been credited for the
introduction of detective fiction and hence the development of science fiction (Meyers, 2000). Poe
is one of the American writers who did nothing but write, for living alone and was subsequently
