The theme of death
Death is the termination of the link between the mind and the body. It is widely believed
that death occurs at the moment the heart stops beating, but according to the definition of death
herein used stopping of the heartbeat does not necessarily mean is dead because the mind and the
body may still be together. Consequently, one dies when the mind leaves the body for another life.
Analogically, the body is like a guesthouse and the mind is the guest and hence just like the guest
leaves one guesthouse for another so does the mind leaves the body when death occurs. It is
baffling to understand death and how sudden it occurs and most people would rather not think
about it. The following short stories will help in understanding the abruptness and inevitability of
death.

editor. He is widely respected for his love for short stories and poems. He is also regarded as one
of the pioneers of romanticism in America. His literary works have been credited for the
introduction of detective fiction and hence the development of science fiction (Meyers, 2000). Poe
is one of the American writers who did nothing but write, for living alone and was subsequently
