This week’s learning activities are video case studies on the Department of Health and Human Services Website, https://www.thinkculturalhealth.hhs.gov/resources/videos.
Choose one of the four videos and discuss the following:
- What is the diverse cultural background of the patient involved? After searching for information this culture, how do these individual perceive health and illness?
- What is the overarching issue being presented in this video?
- What can be done to overcome the issue? Do research outside of the video—this information should be from professional, scholarly sources.
- Choose an example of a time you had to overcome a cultural barrier in your nursing practice. What was the issue? What was the diverse cultural background? What did you do to overcome the issue?

A culture is a predetermined and generally accepted pattern of behavior shared among
persons living in a community. These patterns of behavior have diverse effects on these people's
lives from how they relate to persons of other cultures, their religious beliefs, their perception of
healthcare, among other aspects. In healthcare, cultural beliefs may manifest either in the
individual's perception of healthcare, causes of disease, interaction with healthcare practitioners,
among many other forms. In these ways, cultural perspectives may be an obstacle to healthcare. It
lies with the healthcare practitioner to understand the patient's cultural background and make the
necessary adjustments to accommodate their beliefs in order to facilitate health care delivery. In
