The Greenbelt Movement was founded in 1977 by the late Professor Wangari Maathai,
who was at the time the leader of the National Council of Women of Kenya. Maathai founded
GBM in response to the devastating state of forests in the country. Long before its formation,
Kenya’s major forests blossomed and acted as the water catchment areas (Maathai, 2013).
Communities in Kenya depend on rivers for clean water and for electricity generation. At the
