Despite numerous studies documenting the presence of racial and ethnic disparities in
various health issues including infant mortality, cancer, and cardiovascular disease in the
American society, the disparity appears to be more pronounced when it comes to kidney disease.
It has been found that African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native-Americans have
significantly higher risks of developing kidney diseases when compared to Whites. For instance,
according to Nzerue et al (2002), incidences of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have been found
to be four times higher among African-Americans when compared to the white population.
Nzerue et al (2002) also continue to note that diseases that cause chronic kidney failure; such as
hypertension, diabetes mellitus, human immunodeficiency virus-associated nephropathy, and
systemic lupus erythematosus are more prevalent among the African-American patients.
Nicholas et al (2013) note that despite the ESRD being disproportionately higher among the
minority communities, survival rates once put on dialysis is paradoxically higher among the
minority groups. There is a high chance that social, economic, and environmental factors play
major roles in defining these disparities. Therefore, it is paramount to have an elaborate
understanding the socioeconomic and environmental situation of these minority groups in
relation to the prevalence of kidney diseases. With such knowledge, rational public health
