Introduction
Diabetes is a disease is caused by a person’s body failure to produce enough insulin or if
the body is unable to regulate insulin in the body. This then leads to the presence of high glucose
levels in the blood. The disease is very prevalent around the world affecting millions of people
both the young and the old. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas and its job is to
ensure that the blood cells get glucose that is processed for energy. When the glucose does not get
into the blood cells, its levels are elevated which leads to further complications (American Diabetes
Association, 2017).
There are 3 common types of diabetes i.e. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body is unable
to produce insulin and it's normally diagnosed in children and young adults. People who suffer
from Type 1 diabetes must take insulin shots every day. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body is
unable to utilize the insulin that is produced well and it can be diagnosed at any age although it's
most common in middle-aged or older people. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of
diabetes. The third type is gestational diabetes which only occurs in pregnant women and goes
away after delivery. Gestational diabetes can cause serious complications to both the mother and
baby. This type of diabetes increases the chances of the woman suffering from type 2 diabetes later
