RESPONSE POST 2 Some of the benefits to Philips of shifting so much of its global production to China include low wage rates, an educated workforce as China has a literacy rate of 96.36%, a robust Chinese economy, a stable exchange rate that is linked to the U.S. dollar through a managed float, a rapidly expanding industrial base that consists of many other Western and Chinese companies that Philips uses as suppliers, and easier access to world markets given China’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2011 (Hill & Hult, 2018). b)What are the risks associated with a heavy concentration of manufacturing assets in China? There are some risks associated with a heavy concentration of manufacturing assets in China. It would be very risky if the political, economic or other problems disrupt production seeing that most of their R&D center and even the global headquarters of its domestic appliances are placed in Shanghai. If there are economic problems in China, it would greatly affect the demand and also production of Philips products. c)What strategies might Philips adopt to maximize the benefits and mitigate the risks associated with moving so much product? For Philips to maximize the benefits, it would be best that the company places its production centers in different parts of the world that are classified as low-cost countries such as China, India, Indonesia and Russia. Through this, not only can Philips save costs but also lessen the risks. The economy of these countries are also stable so it is safe. However, if something were to happen to one of the production centers in those countries, there are still other production centers to back Philips up so that the production wouldn’t completely stop and delay the shipping of products to other places.
