Gender Income Disparity
It has been more than five decades since the passage of the Equal Pay Act in 1963. The major
goal of the legislation was to ‘prohibit discrimination on account of sex in the payment of wages
by employers’ (Bertrand & Hallock, 2011). However, even with such a lapse in time in the
passage of the law, women in the US are yet to realize the aspirations of equal pay. However, it
would be imperative to mention that they have indeed made great strides because they now make
82 cents for every dollar that men make, compared to 54 cents for every dollar they used to make
before the passage of the act. These are the statistics that have been released by the federal
government. Of course, this points to the bigger issue of gender inequality, but the focus will be
limited to the pay gaps in gender in the USA. Scholars estimate that it will take at least seven
decades to address the income discrepancies in the US fully. The bigger question, can the women
afford to wait that long to get what is rightfully theirs? All indications show that income
discrepancies between genders in the US are a latent reflection of the gender barriers; socially,
economically and politically that have been used to stifle American women and prevent them
from realizing their full potential and compete as equal counterparts to their male counterparts.
Nature has a way of taking care of itself. It implies that human beings are supposed to adapt to
ways of nature, rather than try and outcompete nature. The essence of raising this point is to
show how nature has been used to confer a competitive advantage to men. Research indicates
‘many mothers suffer workplace-related consequences after having a child’ (Ryznar, 2016).
