  1. Describe the key components of conducting a comprehensive cultural assessment (rationales, interventions and evaluations may be found on the internet).
  2. Choose two of the components, reflect on your own culture (white/American) and how it impacts your own attitude toward those aspects of providing culturally diverse care.
  3. Imagine that you are working in a physician’s office. A patient of a background different from your own comes in to be seen for a newly diagnosed problem. Create two nursing diagnoses that reflect cultural diversity (look at Appendix A for guidance ie., “Barrier to communication”); then give rationale for each diagnosis and describe how you would intervene and evaluate for success of your plan of care.

A patient's cultural background influences his/her behavior. Nevertheless, while certain
attitudes, as well as attitudes, are associated with specific cultural groups, not all individuals
belonging to the same cultural background hold the same views and behaviors. As such, when
providing care to a patient from a different culture, it is important for an individual to be aware
of as well as respect their beliefs and preferences; otherwise, one may be considered indifferent
and insensitive, and perhaps incompetent. The best way to achieve this is by conducting a
cultural assessment. This assessment entails the systematic, comprehensive examination of
people, families, communities and even groups about their health-related cultural practices,
beliefs, and values as well (Lewis et al., 2014). It is the best way to ensure that one avoids
stereotyping, determines the patient’s health care needs and also plans a meaningful as well as
culturally congruent care.
Components of Cultural Assessment
There are six key components of conducting a comprehensive cultural assessment. The
first component is communication. Miscommunication is a major problem in hospitals. The
most apparent is when the hospital staff and the patient speak different languages. As such, the
nurse should have good communication skills. The nurse should be aware of such things as the
patient’s utilization of body language and silence (Fatma, 2013).The second element is space.
