Running Head: DEFORESTATION
It is approximated that about 30% of the planet cover is made of vegetation. Trees create a
conducive ecosystem that is essential for the sustainability of life in the planet (Ross et al. 2016).
Slowly the ground cover that includes the trees has continued to reduce over time with some of
the countries around the globe having less than 6% of the vegetation cover. Deforestation is one
of the major global concerns to the environment. It refers to the cutting down of trees without
replenishing them through the planting of new ones. Most of the countries around the world are
under a major threat of desertification that has been triggered the human activities around the
continents. There are major activities around the world that have contributed to deforestation and
have left most of the land bare, with no vegetation cover to protect the soil. The major sources of
Logging involves the cutting down of trees in massive numbers for the carpentry and
furniture making (Pan& Campbell 2017). Shelter and other products that are derived from trees all
contribute to logging. A large number of trees are cut down without the efforts being put in place
to replace the thousands of trees that have been cut down. The paper industry is among one of the
biggest consumers of trees and billions of trees each year are directed to the manufacture and
processing of the papers.
Farming activities that include livestock and crop farming have necessitated to the cutting
down of trees around the world (Lacombe et al. 2016). People tend to cut down the trees to clear
the land in preparation for crop farming. Livestock keeping requires the building of sheds as well
as fencing that calls for the cutting of the trees to perform the intended purpose. Where agriculture
has been prevailing over time, it is very rare to find a large amount of trees as even the forests are
cleared down to pave the way for the agricultural activities. With the increased and rapidly growing
population, more food is in demand to feed them, and thus this calls for the clearing of more land
for cultivation to achieve the required food security.
Populations around the planet have continued to increase at an alarming rate. With this,
there is the need to provide shelter to the billions of people across the world. Large populations
call for the development of cities and towns and therefore the greatest contributor to urbanization.
The increased po...
