Biology 102 Paper Guidelines For Critique of Scientific Claims Paper This ad is making a scientific claim BIOL 102 Spring 2018 ... is it true? For your BIOLOLGY 102 paper, you will critique a scientific claim made in popular culture. The above ad is an example of a claim being made on-line. In lecture, we explored the science behind this example claim to decide whether the believe it or not. Your job is to find a different claim, one you are interested in, and explore the science behind the claim. You will then write a paper explaining the claim and what you found. To help you work through the process, you will check in with your TA as follows: • Step 1: Identify your TOPIC. Find an advertising claim that has a scientific basis – Turn a hard copy of it in to your TA. Along with your claim, think it with a skeptic’s eye and write a brief description of what questions you feel need answers before you can decide whether the claim is based on legitimate science or is pseudoscience. TOPICS YOU CANNOT USE – Love potions from Athena Institute (we did this in class); Vaccination & autism (your textbook did this one); or Cell phones & cancer (we did this in class) (DUE in LAB the week of Jan 22nd). • Step 2: Complete INFORMATION LITERACY ASSIGNMENT-1: “Evaluating Reliability of Information Sources” (DUE in LAB week of Jan 29th - Lab 3). • Step 3: Complete INFORMATION LITERACY ASSIGNMENT-2: “How to Find Scholarly Articles”. Identify 1-2 scientific peer-reviewed papers (if your advertising is based on a study, then be sure to find that one). Find other, secondary sources to help you evaluate the claims as well. • Step 4: UPLOAD a high-quality DRAFT of your paper on BlackBoard before 10AM Friday Feb 16th. • Step 5. Use your TA’s feedback to make a final revision and upload your FINAL PAPER by 10AM Friday March 9th. Mechanics: • Your paper must be typed, and written using an easy to read 11-point font, (Arial and Times New Roman are recommended; avoid difficult to read fonts like Old English Script). • The paper should be in paragraph format and should be single-spaced. A well thought out and researched paper will be approximately 3 pages single-spaced (not including the bibliography). • You do not need a title page – just put your name in the header. • Margins should be no larger than 1” on all sides (but they can be smaller). Description of the Paper HOW TO FIND A TOPIC: Scientific claims can be found in advertising, in social media, in the popular press, and in scientific publications. Some of these claims are supported by legitimate, rigorous scientific studies while others are based on pseudoscience. Pseudoscience is characterized by scientific-sounding statements or practices that do not meet the standards of the scientific method (revisit chapter 24 in the textbook). Your job is to find a scientific claim or claims in advertising, social media or the popular press and explore the foundations on which they are based. You will draw on knowledge gained from BIOL 102 course content which you will use to dive into the scientific literature. You must include both primary and secondary literature. Your sources must be reputable and chosen with care (refer to the Information Literacy Exercises 1 & 2). You must cite your sources correctly. You must include a brief, annotated bibliography in which you explain why you think it is a scholarly source as well as the key information you learned by reading it. PAPER ORGANIZATION: Your paper will include the following sections: Introduction: ▪ Introduce the topic with appropriate background – what is the problem or question your scientific claim addresses? ▪ Describe the product and the claims made about it. Reference a figure of the item discussed. Body and Discussion of the Claims: ▪ Discuss the study/studies the advertisement references to support its claims. ▪ Describe the details of the experimental design – was the hypothesis clearly defined? Was the hypothesis /prediction falsifiable? What were the controls? Who were the test subjects? How many replicates were in each treatment? ▪ Evaluate the conclusions based on the study design. Are the conclusions appropriate? Do the conclusions logically follow from experiment results? Do they overgeneralize? ▪ Critique the credentials and motivation of those making the scientific claim – What are their qualifications to make the claim? Do they hold a personal belief that will be supported by the claim? Do they stand to make money if other accept the claim? Conclusion (you must weave this content into your conclusion): ▪ Is this an example of legitimate science or pseudo-science? Is it a combination of the two? ▪ What do you think about the legitimacy of their claims? ▪ Do you recommend this product for its intended audience? Bibliography: Cite your 3 sources using APA or CSE citation style (you will go over this in Lab 4). Annotate each citation with an evaluation/discussion of the source – include the following: • Is this a primary or secondary source? • What are the credentials of the author/s? • What information did you use this source for? RUBRICS for Each of the four Submissions: Rubric for TOPIC Points Earned Advertisement provided Claims made are “sciency” in nature. Claims made have enough depth to support this paper assignment. Etc.) Body and Discussion • Evaluates the claims • Discusses the scientific articles found to help evaluate the claims. • Critically evaluates the experimental design in the experiments described in the claims. • Makes concrete connections between the scientific articles researched and the claims made in the advertisement. • Integrates the information from the articles used into the discussion of the advertisement rather than simply giving individual reports on each paper. Conclusion • Clearly states whether the claim is a valid scientifically supported claim or not. • Identifies/Reiterates foundation of that conclusion. Claim: “You grow more when sleeping than you do when awake” by Uratex Foam

Introduction
The article or else advert “Do you really grow taller only when you are asleep?” was
published by Uratex Foam March 14 year 2013 (Uratex, 2013). Uratex Foam is a company that
specializes in manufacturing of quality foam. In the process of advertising their products such as
mattresses, Sofa-bed, pillows and bed accessories, the company claimed that “You
grow more when sleeping than you do when awake” The main question or else the main
problem in this claim is; Does the fact that people do really grow taller when they are asleep
bears any truth or it is just a mere myth? During our childhood years we were always lured to
sleep by being told that we should go to bed if at all we wanted to grow tall. Despite the fact that
many people always take this as a myth, it also has some scientific proof. As such, this article
sought to answer whether there is any reliable reason and scientific proof behind it, or whether it
is just a misconception that has gone through the ages. Uratex Foam is using this scientific claim
in a bid to attract more clients as they will gain interest on knowing whether there is any
relationship between growing taller and sleeping. All the same, the fact remains that sleeping and
growing tall are related. However, this does not imply that if someone does not sleep at all, then
that person will not grow tall. It also does not imply that those who sleep the most are the tallest.
It only suggests that people get taller when asleep since the body releases hormones when one is
deep asleep. Therefore, in this context, the discussion below explores whether sleep indeed plays
a critical role in physical growth and development.
The studies/advertisement references to support the claim
To start with, Society for Endocrinology (2018) claims that scientifically it is fact that the
body produces growth hormones when one is in deep sleep. The pituitary glands which are
responsible for producing growth hormones usually release them into the blood stream. As a
result, this causes the bones to not only stiffen but also to strengthen and grow in length bit by
bit. Thus the article takes this as the reference point to the fact that we can conclude that sleep as
a matter of fact does play a crucial role when it comes to physical growth and development. The
study also goes ahead to bring in the claim as to whether since sleep has been positively linked to
growing taller. Does this necessarily impl...
