The United Nations adopted 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDG) that were
supposed to promote dignity for the world’s populace (United Nations, 2008). The 8 MDGs had
different functions. However, their primary role was to ensure that the dignity of world’s
population is protected. Besides, it aims at eradicating poverty and reducing hunger. It also
targets to achieve universal primary education and promote gender equality and empower
women. In addition, the millennium goals are designed to combat the spread of various diseases
such HIV and AIDS, malaria, cholera and other diseases which are detrimental to the people
(United Nations, 2008). Furthermore, MDGs are aimed at reducing child mortality and
improving healthcare.
The United Nations has made tremendous success in implementing the United Nations
Development Goals. The goals target eight key areas, and there are various achievements that the
UN has realized. Firstly, the numbers of people who are living below $1.25 have reduced from
1.9 billion to 836 million since the inception of the goals (United Nations, 2008). Secondly, the
number of children being registered in the primary school has risen significantly from 83 percent
in 2000 to 97 percent. Thirdly, two-thirds of the world’s developing countries are making
tremendous progress towards achieving gender parity. The child mortality rates have also
reduced significantly in the last 25 years. However, the United Nations have not met their target.
Halting the spread of HIV and AIDS has not been achieved, but the rate of new infections has
reduced by 40 percent since 2000. 2.6 billion People have also gained access to clean and
reliable water since 1990 (United Nations, 2008). Lastly, the maternal mortality ration has also
reduced tremendously since 1990. Therefore, a lot of effort has been considered in meeting the
goals. However, some goals have not been met especially in the developing countries. For
