Mental Health in the Society
The mental health of an individual or community entails the emotional, psychological
and social well-being of the said individual or community. Mental health holistically takes into
the act the thinking, feelings, and actions that people experience daily. It is through mental health
principles that psychologists and psychiatrists can gauge and evaluate how members of a society
handle stress, relate with one another and make life choices (Hwang & Goto, 2008). The mental
health of a society is important and should be analyzed at every stage of social development. A
holistic societal mental health research must cover mental health issues among children, the
youth, and adults. The study should also appreciate the gender stratification in the society and its
relevance to the general mental health of the society.
Mental Health in Black and Ethnic Minority Communities
This paper specifically looks into the mental health among black and ethnic minority
communities. Cultural differences among different societies affect the very definition of mental
health itself. Due to historical factors, ethnic minority groups especially African-Americans have
endured systematic discrimination. The psychological well-being of these minority groups has
only been subject to a few recent pieces of research. However, these recent papers have not
holistically looked into the mental health of the minority groups living in America. The minority
groups in America face a higher risk of mental health problems due to a myriad of reasons and
unique circumstances that they persevere daily (Pieterse et al., 2012).
Historically, the black community and other communities of color in the United States of
America experience unique and considerable challenges in accessing mental health services
