a) Urbanization is the increase in the number of people living in cities and towns or urban
areas. It entails rural urban migration and expansion of urban areas. It is associated with
industrialization and development of infrastructure like roads and housing.
b) Urbanization develops in three phases or stages. It starts with suburbanization where
smaller settlements or suburbs increase around the major cities. It results as more people move
into urban areas in search of opportunity. The second stage is counter-urbanization. As the city
gets congested, the richer individuals will move out of the cities in search of the greener
environment. The last stage is re-urbanization where the areas occupied by the rich who moved
out of town will develop. Finally, a sustained city will result.
