Greek philosophy in significant proportions shaped the western mindset (Kramarae &
Spender, 2004). Therefore, William Barret, in his comparison of the Hebraic mind and
Hellenism is, in essence, comparing the Hebrew and Western mindsets. The difference between
the two, according to him, is that the Hebrew mindset focuses on practice, while the other
focuses on knowledge. The Hebrew emphasizes doing the right thing, moral virtues, and a strict
sense of duty as opposed to Hellenism, the Greek mindset which the Western mindset is based
on, which focuses more on the right thinking, spontaneity and intelligence, and places great
importance on intellectual virtues (Barret, 1958).
Our mindset is significantly instrumental in determining our understanding of any text we
read. The radical changes in the interpretation of different biblical texts can be attributed to the
abandonment of a Hebrew mindset and the adoption of a western one. For instance, according to
the Hebrew mindset, the severe punishments meted upon those who disobeyed Yahweh were
well-deserved and justified (Irwin, 2003). Based on this argument, the ten plagues in Exodus
chapter through twelve, for instance, whose severity was extreme to the extent of resulting in the
death of all first-born children were a fair punishment for the Egyptian’s cruelty. The western
