Description

Part 1: Plan your user tests

By this point, you already have decided what aspect(s) of your web site to (re)design and you have created a prototype of that design. The next step is to plan your user tests. You have two options for usability tests:

  • "Wizard of Oz" style usability tests using paper prototypes, as described in class and demonstrated in these videos:

WEB DESIGN 1 Yuwei Zhou Luer Hao Group Name: Chafing the Dream Assignment 4 Part 2 Webly is a website designed to allow customers to make direct purchases of goods over the internet. Buyers identify what they want or what interests them by directly visiting the web page and making their selection from an array of products displayed on the website. Also, buyers can search through the website to find what they want in particular. Upon the selection of the product, the buyer follows some easy steps to complete the transaction. The site’s functional requirements include an accurate display of products as well as the price, accept the orders placed by the users, allow customers to add several orders to cart, allow users to change products in a cart and allow the customers or user to look through the website for other products. Among the characteristics of the expected users include familiarity with the English language since the entire display on the website will be in English. The expected users should be 15 years and beyond-regardless of gender. The user needs to be educated and possess basic computer skills, for easy maneuvring within the website. Part 3 Description of stakeholders In the process of designing the website, it is important to note the website’s obligations to the relevant direct or indirect stakeholder. The website’s direct stakeholders include customers who frequent the website to make purchases, the suppliers who supply the products that need to WEB DESIGN 2 be sold through the website and the employees who facilitate the delivery of the products that have been bought through the website. Indirect stakeholders include the government, regulators and trade associations. The trade associations play the role of public relations whereby they undertake activities such as advertisement and lobbying. The website is obligated to the government and regulators to provide legitimate services and abide by the laws that govern its operations. Both direct and indirect stakeholders possess a particular interest in the design as well as the operations of the website. Therefore, a succinct identification of stakeholders alleviates conflict of interest in the website’s operations. Description of user investigation An investigation of the user reveals that the users are tech-savvy and educated. They are often impressed by new things that are currently in the market. Generally, the users are obsessed with the current trends in the global market, be it jewelry, shoes, clothes, technological gadgets, and even cars. With regards to their requirements, I have learned that they need a webpage which loads very fast since slow web pages are annoying and render them impatient; therefore, they cannot navigate through the website for long. Also, it is noted that the users love a website which is user-friendly, mobile friendly-can be read from a variety of browsers, branded on every page for them to know where they are, easy to navigate and the links are visible and finally, the content is regularly updated. Additionally, the users want a website which is consistent in terms of the content, style, font, and design. Description of the functional, data and usability requirements Functional requirements Functional requirements pertain to the functions carried out by the website and they include interface requirements whereby certain fields can only accept numerical or alphabetical WEB DESIGN 3 data, only. Another functional requirement is the business requirement where data must be keyed in before approval of a request. Another functional need is the compliance or regulatory requirement where the website limits access to only users who have been authorized and the website will contain an operational audit trail. Finally, the website needs to have a security requirement where members can only enter data into the system but cannot delete or approve requests. Data requirements These refer to how data will be collected and used on the website. Therefore, with Webly the names of the users will be separated into fields that require the first and last names, the locations need to be alphabetized. Amounts need to be stated numerically, the first names of letters need be alphabetized. The website will also personalize the experience of the user by displaying the word “welcome” which will be accompanied by the first and the last name of the user. Additionally, information in the website will be presented in as a whole in the form of a table, values of single properties which in this case will be columns and finally, data will be presented as several properties in an instance which in this case will take the form of several columns in a row. Usability requirements The users need not to consult a manual so that they can navigate through Webly’s interface design. Therefore, the usability requirements include no or few user errors thus fulfilling the need for efficiency. Another requirement as regards to usability is intuitiveness where the headings, and the error or help prompts/messages are easy to comprehend thus making the website easy to navigate through. Finally, the website should have a low perceived workload WEB DESIGN 4 where the interface looks easy to use and not frustrating, demanding and intimidating to use (Aykin, 2016) Reference Aykin, N. (Ed.). (2016). Usability and internationalization of information technology. CRC Press. Assignment 5 Web redesign: Webly Webly is a website that offers an online shopping platform for buyers to purchase goods. Buyers are presented with a variety of products to choose from by visiting the website, (products are well categorized). Also, the site allows customers to search for specific products they wish to purchase. The site suggests products that may be of interest to the buyer, based on the search history of the buyer. When the buyer selects the product of their choice, the site takes them through a short payment procedure to complete the transaction. The site offers a pay on delivery option and gives a timeline of how long the delivery will take for buyers who opt to pay for the product on delivery. This paper seeks to identify aimed at improving or redesigning the usability section of Webly website. Usability requirements redesign The usability requirements of a website are the expectations and specifications that make it easy for the user to operate (Dingli, 2014). Webly website will do its best to be user-friendly and provide the user with an ample time to navigate make purchases. The website will be easily WEB DESIGN 5 memorable to use without any manual consultation. Based on its user-friendliness, redesigning the website will focus on the usability requirements Learnability Webly users will be privileged to use a website that works smoothly without any complicated buttons or non-understandable error messages. The website will also keep a memory of the users’ search history to make it easier for the user while searching a certain product. Performance Delays while are a huge problem for websites. They can be irritating and frustrating for the user. Webly will have a high performance in completion of a task regardless of the number of users using the website. Accessibility The website will only allow authorized (registered) users to select and purchase products. However, unauthorized users can view the products and navigate the website but cannot make purchases. User engagement Webly will have a customer care section where the users will be able to air their opinions, complaints or recommendations. Users will also be able to describe their experience using the website. Conclusion This redesign has seen some improvements from the original. For starters, the original design has limited user engagement- users are only engaged while buying products. The redesigned website allows interaction of users with themselves and the website. Secondly, the original website does not offer pay-on-delivery which is a highlighted feature of the redesigned WEB DESIGN 6 website. Customers, who are direct stakeholders, are majorly represented by the redesign. The entire usability requirements are meant to make it easy for users/customers to use the website. This also goes to suppliers whose products are made easy to find on the website. References Dingli, A., & Cassar, S. (2014). An intelligent framework for website usability. Advances in Human-Computer Interaction, 2014, 5. Your planning should include: Tasks: Decide what tasks you're going to ask the user to do. How will you describe the tasks to the users? You should test multiple tasks or multiple versions of the same task, depending on your prototype and design. Plan for each user test to last a minimum of 15 minutes. The task should not be overly specific or constrained - for example, if you have redesigned an airline reservation site, a good task might be "Make a reservation to fly home for spring break." Create whatever scripts you will need for your facilitator. Data: 1. What are you going to measure time, questions, errors, overall satisfaction, etc.)? 2. How will you make the measurements (by what combination of observation, exit interview, other means)? 3. How will you collect data (on paper, online survey, video recording, other)? Create whatever materials you need to collect your data. Users: 1. Who will be your test subjects? 2. How will you recruit them? Choose people whose characteristics are representative of the intended users of the system. Try not to use family members or close friends, because they may not be candidly critical of the design. You must have a minimum of five test subjects. This means that you may need to have one or two additional tests scheduled to allow for no-shows or other failures. Roles: During the user tests, which of your team members will be the facilitator, the "Wizard" pretending to be the computer, the observer(s), other roles? [In real user testing, nobody on the testing team would switch roles between test subjects because it would make the testing inconsistent. For purposes of this assignment, however, you may switch roles for different test subjects if you wish, just so each team member can experience more than one role.] Setting: Where and when will you do your tests? Part 2: Rehearse Once you have planned everything, rehearse the entire test at least once with one member of your group or a friend playing the role of the user. Test out your prototype, your scripts, and your data collection. Pay attention to what works and what doesn't, and how long the test takes. After the test, you may find that you need to adjust your scripts, test materials, or even your prototype to include some aspect or alternative that you overlooked earlier. Part 3: Conduct your user tests Run your user tests with at least 5 users. Make sure that you have scheduled enough time, and have time between users to debrief with your team and reset your materials before the next test. Part 4: Analyze Analyze your data and identify the usability problems in your prototype. Part 5: Redesign Redesign your prototype to address the issues identified in your analysis. The new material for Section 3 (Assignment 6) should include: • A description of your user testing plan, focusing on the tasks, data collection, and user recruitment. (500- 700 words) (15 points) • A description of how the user testing went in practice. How did you recruit participants? Did the study go according to plan? Were there unforeseen difficulties? Did anything surprising happen? (200-300 words) (10 points) • A list or table describing each test subject's relevant characteristics, perhaps including age, gender, occupation, level of technical sophistication, previous experience with your web site (if it previously existed) or the subject matter of the site. To preserve your testers' privacy, do not include the subjects' actual names. (10 points) • A summary of the user testing results, including descriptions of the data you collected and usability issues that were identified. (500-1000 words). If you have numerical data or other results you wish to share, feel free to include them in an appendix. (15 points) • A description of the design changes you made based on the user testing results, including a justification of why you made the changes you did. (enough words to effectively convey your design changes) (10 points) • A new version of the prototype reflecting the changes you made. (10 points) - in the interest of time I will allow good wireframes that can communicate the task and the task flows (for sub tasks) in a sequence (like the second video clip on blood test) You should also include (if appropriate) the following as appendices (these will count as part of the point allocations as listed above): • Any testing materials you created (like scripts, questionnaires, data recording forms, etc.). Any numerical data or other results from the tests. For example, if you counted errors as a measure, it would be appropriate to include a table of errors broken down by task and user. .

Plan For User Tests
Description of the User Testing Plan

Webly is a website that is designed to provide the platform for the users to participate in
the purchase of goods on the internet directly. Therefore, the user test will focus on the interested
individuals who usually buy products on the internet primarily on the types of products, which
the website offers. The task, which I will pick for user test, is the option for the types of products
that will be available as well as the purchasing and tracking page for the product. The users for
the test will be shown the sample of the products to select the ones that they may like which will
direct them to the next step by clicking to purchase (Trice, 2015). On the purchase section, the
page will indicate the price and the methods of delivery, the time that will be taken to process the
order and the place for the delivery of the product.
Additionally, after the purchase page, the next page will be displayed to indicate the
agreements on the terms and conditions of the company towards selecting the products. The final
page will show the tracking of the product where the user of the platform will be able to see or
begiven updates about the movement of the product and how far it will be able to reach the
customer. The essential element that will be significant as the measurement will include several
aspects of the website (Trice, 2015). The time taken for the test users to log into the platform is
one of the element to be measured. This involves the period taken in logging in and selecting the
product until the whole process is over for delivery is finished.
Another item for measurement is the types of question, which the users ask regarding the
use of th...
