Today’s classrooms have become more diverse therefore raises the concern of how
learning can reach the needs of all students (Martins-Shannon & White, 2012). This paper
analyzes articles on the effect of language, culture, and diversity in the learning process. The
paper discusses the unique aspects of language development in elementary school learners, the
possible impact of language, culture, and diversity in a future classroom and ways to handle
diversity in classrooms.
Summary of articles
Lee & Buxton (2011), suggest ways to engage culturally and linguistically diverse
learners in science classrooms. The diversities range from students of different color, lowincome families, those learning English as a new language, native speakers of English among
others. Science learning focuses on mental processes such as problem-solving and arguments.
Science instruction is centered on student’s own observations, questions, and understanding.
When teachers understand and utilize diverse languages and culture of children as intellectual
resources in science classroom it leads to more understanding and opportunities to learn the
