Self-Redemption
Introduction
Cheryl Strayed's self-redemption book of Wild, talks of a twenty six year old lady known
as Cheryl Strayed who has gone through a lot of difficulties. Her mother had passed on after
suffering from cancer; she failed to get her degree due to being short of one of her papers, and
she had just broken up with her husband. She changed her name to Strayed and made up her
mind to start hiking the Pacific trail by her in order to find out a solution and free herself from
cases of heroin and sexual immorality as nothing seemed to work for her. From the experience
she got in the wilderness, she learnt a lot concerning redemption and not quitting in life
situations. In the end, Cheryl Strayed regretted nothing of what she had done or gone through in
the past after the long trail (Strayed, P. 26).
The Happiness Mindset by Brandon Sternberg comprises of 12 strategies that an
individual should apply in order to live a joyous and happy life even though certain situations
may get tough in life. The book explains that there are certain things that an individual is never
thought or told while young. The person gets the knowledge about certain things in life from
personal experience or personal observations. This essay will compare and contrast the
experiences of Cheryl Strayed's experiences in her journey in the wilderness and the three chosen

strategies of happiness by Brandon Sternberg. The strategies to be discussed include desire,
being positive and committed, and coming up with coping strategies (Brandon, P. 8).
Comparison between Strayed's experiences and Brandon's strategies of happiness
The experiences that Cheryl Strayed went through from her walk in the desert with the
aim of overcoming the problems she had gone through was from his desire, being positive and
committed, and coming up with coping strategies. After applying these strategies she was able to
go through such a long journey by herself and experience a lot of difficulties in the wilderness.
She then overcame her challenges after the journey and learnt a lot of things including not to
regret on the past actions. She ended up being a happy lady after the case. The similarities and
differences between Cheryl Strayed's experiences in the book of Wild Redemption and Brandon
Sternberg's experiences in the book of The Happiness Mindset are discussed below:
Similarities
Both Cheryl Strayed's book of the Wild and Brandon's book of The Happy Mindset
addresses issues of an individual finding out happiness and living a stress-free life. Brandon
Sternberg has addressed twelve strategies that should be applied by individuals in order to live a
happy life. Some of these strategies have been applied by Cheryl Strayed in her book of
redemption. From her experience in the journey, Cheryl Strayed was finding out a solution to the
problems she had encountered in her life and live a happy life. Therefore, both books address the
issue of happiness in that each and every individual in the world desires to live a happy life and
most individuals can do anything at their own cost to gain happiness and be free of stress
(Brandon, P. 12).

There is a similarity between Cheryl Strayed's experience and Brandon's strategy of
desire to achieve. Desire is the will or discernment an individual has to achieve a certain goal
including the desire to achieve happiness. Brandon's strategy of having the desire to achieve
happiness is applied in the case of Cheryl Strayed's experience in her journey. Before making up
her mind to start the journey, Cheryl Strayed had a will or desire in her heart to change her
stressful way of life. For her to fulfil her desires she decided to set a journey of hiking the Pacific
Trail on her own. The desires she had in her heart to obtain happiness encouraged her through
the tough experience of tiredness, hunger strike and dreadful cases which made her to finally
overcome the situation (Strayed, P. 28).
In Brandon's strategy of being optimistic and committed, there is a similar relation to the
strategy and what Strayed went through in the wilderness to obtain happiness. Being optimistic
about life means having good thoughts on circumstan...
