1. Two civil rights events that have influenced a sense of social responsibility in the
American government today
The first event is the march of Martin king Luther King Jr. from the Selma to the state of
Montgomery; the passage of the voting rights of 1965 is highly connected to the protest
movement that was witnessed in Selma, Alabama. These protests were witnessed in Alabama
since there were less than 2% registered voters in this states and the involvement of King helped
to increase the awareness of the challenges faced by the black Americans. Significantly, the
voting rights were passed in 1964, but most of the southern states did not allow the blacks to
register as voters. As a result, numerous organisations such as the southern leadership council
and the Nonviolent Student Committee emerged and urged the black Americans to fight for their
rights. However, this movement faced fierce resistance in some southern states resulting in the
injury of some protestors (Burrell, 2018). Therefore, SCLC together with King Martin Luther Jr.
began the protest against the attack on the innocent individuals. Additionally, the brutal scenes
were aired on the television thus drawing all the religious to the Selma protest. As a result of
these reactions, Lyndon Johnson addressed the Congress and asked them to pass a right voting
