In a setting of higher education, there is a relationship between the leader and the support
staff, parents, and leaners in terms of their beliefs, experiences, and values. The turbulent
financial environment, new technologies, greater pressures for accountability, and demographic
changes are among the obstacles that the higher education leaders are facing and thus creating
the need for supportive and shared leadership as a solution. Shared leadership plays a critical role
for organizations which are better positioned to learn, perform, innovate, and adapt to the various
challenges facing the higher education organizations. This paper provides a summary of the
literature discussing how the experience, beliefs, and values of a leader affects his or her
collaborative nature. The paper also provides an evaluation of how these three factors of a
leaders in higher education institutions influence their relationship with the support staff, parents,
and the learners. Finally, the paper proposes a strategy for the effective support staff, parent, and
leaners inclusion in the higher education institution’s shared leadership.

Literature Review

According to Cashman (2017), the values, beliefs, and experiences of a leader have a
significant influence on how the leader collaborate with others in his leadership style. Various
literature indicates that collaborative leaders develop an environment where the followers can
unite for a common vision and purpose and this cannot happen unless the leader has a set of
values which make him lead by example for others to follow (Cashman, 2017). For example, the
value of passion in collaborative leaders is what drives people in stepping up to a challenge and
embrace ambitious responsibilities which require the leader to forgo their need to control for the
sake of embracing collaborative leadership.
