I had never read non- fiction work before till I met ‘the four loves’ by C.S Lewis. The book
seems more of an academic text to a novel with interesting use of metaphors and anecdotes.
Interesting facts stand out a bit old but provide enough food for thought. From the book, Lewis
splits love into four categories based on Greek works for love- affection, friendship, and Eros.
The last category is described as agape or charity love. He also outlines different an aspect of
love drawing links between ‘like and loves, needs and appreciation’ and many more. Moreover,
Lewis describes charity as supernatural while the other three as natural loves with more details
stated in the book.
The three types of love reflect charity love in them and how they go against God’s love and their
destructive nature. Eros is the most profound type of love with a risk of failing easily; Eros
outrage conflicts from Christians because it is seen negative and often leads to sin. Moreover, in
many occasions relationships lead to suicide and many other tragedies. According to Lewis, Eros
is romantic love without sexual activities. This differentiates Eros from lust due to an absence of
pleasures. Lewis brings out clearly the difference between loving and loving one person and the
distinctions between receiving and giving.
