The writer has used the wall in the poem to depict the oppression that the persona
undergoes based on race. The persona who is an African can bring out struggles that hinder him
from achieving his dream. They arise slowly but leave a great impact on his life. As illustrated in
the poem," And then the wall rose, Rose slowly, between me and my dream. Rose until it
touched the sky. "
