ANALYZING WOMEN DURING THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD
It would be imperative to start by mentioning that the medieval period was one of the
most interesting historical periods in England and Europe. From a general perspective, most of
the women who lived during this period were limited to household chores, and they were
considered as inferior human beings to their male counterparts. While some women could be
involved in the outdoor activities such as making hays and reaping, their wages were not of the
same standard as the male. Even in urban areas, the entry of women of women and access to
opportunities had been stifled by the artistic guilds, and the women who lived in these areas were
mainly involved in textiles and weaving activities (Elliott, 67). It should be noted that this did

limit the influence of the women, but some women did have influence even amidst such
challenges. The focus of the essay will try and have a comparison of how Joan of Arc and the
Wife of Bath in The Canterbury Tales are influential in the different social matters of their
respective societies.
There is a need to try and start with a focus on Wife of Bath. She is worldly, both literally
and figuratively. She has been wedded to more than five husbands, and she has travelled all over
the world. She prides herself on her wealth, and she is worldly based on the way she remarks
about her sexual life and marriage (Chaucer, 89). It is almost a way of contrast from the way the
way she has lived and the way she is in Bath, it looks like Bath is just but a jaunt, an
inconvenience. It is a way that seeks to bring one of the major perspectives that have been said
about women in the medieval period, that they got their influence from men, or being from ruling
families. It is interesting that the Wife of Bath does not aspire to such a background, but she it is
interesting on how she has been able to undergo a paradigm that defied the expectations of
