Description

A. Provide a literature review of five academic sources (e.g. peer review journal articles, professional white papers, professional association articles) that discuss the implementation of one of the following health information technologies:

• clinical decision support

• computerized physician order entry

• computerized disease registries

• consumer health information technology applications

• electronic medical record systems

• electronic prescribing

• health information technology in small and rural communities

B. Discuss how you could potentially implement your chosen health information technology (HIT) from part A in a medical workplace.

1. Discuss the steps needed to perform a needs assessment for your chosen HIT in a medical workplace.

2. Explain how to formulate a research question about the implementation of your chosen HIT

3. Explain how to develop a hypothesis on the effects of implementing your chosen HIT

4. Discuss the purpose of using outside research to determine if your chosen HIT should be implemented.

5. Discuss how you would determine your chosen HIT’s value for a medical workplace by doing the following:

a. Compare two research methods that could be used to determine a HIT’s value.

i. Justify which research method would be more appropriate for determining your chosen HIT’s value in a medical workplace.

b. Compare two measurement methods that could be used to determine a HIT’s value.

i. Justify which measurement method would be more appropriate for determining your chosen HIT’s value in a medical workplace.

6. Discuss a data collection tool or technique that could be used to provide data on the implementation of your chosen HIT.

a. Describe the benefits of the chosen tool or technique.

b. Discuss how to analyze the data collected with the chosen tool or technique.

7. Discuss how to create conclusions about the implementation of your chosen HIT that are supported by research and data.

C. Acknowledge sources, using APA-formatted in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

Implementation of Health Information Technologies
Literature Review
A crucial element in healthcare domain involves understanding the financial,
governmental and legal perspectives of the Healthcare Information Technology (HIT). There
are specific guidelines regarding the medical events that require the doctors’ presence.
Additionally, an increased amount of healthcare information has a pervasive effect on the
tests ordered by the patients, the referral patterns and the use of support personnel’s. This
review will explore the implementation of Healthcare Information Technologies in a health
facility, the efforts necessary to carry out an urgent evaluation of Health Information
Technology in a medical workplace, the effects of implementing Health Data Technology
and the reason determining the implementation of Health Information Technology, using
outside research.
The use of Electronic Medical Record Systems
Policy makers, medical players, and healthcare professionals consider the use of
electronic medical record systems, which is a healthcare technology, to transform the
healthcare industry. The Electronic Medical Records are considered as a management system
which is structured to manage, sore, and question the patient's date. The records are
nonetheless controversial in digitalizing healthcare records (Angst et al., 2010). According to
Chebole (2015), the Electronic Medical Record, comprise the use of statistical analysis
software developed to address patient reports, and research applications and clinical trials.
The management of information is fundamental in delivering healthcare, which
depends on the type of healthcare delivery, the capacity of the transaction in the healthcare
facilities, the need to incorporate logical proof to practice, and the management of complex

information. Despite the fact that technology in healthcare information is an explicit theory,
integrating the current information system in the health sector is sometimes difficult and
limited. However, most of the technology uses are centered on the financial and
administrative sphere, rather than clinical service deliveries. The electronic health systems
are more often scrutinized in a casualty environment, while inpatient prefers the benefactor
order entry system. (Chaudhry et al., 2006).
According to the research done by Chaudhry et al., (2006), on the type and functions
of health technology Systems, the use of Electronic Medical Record system, was found as the
most preferred technology. Sixty-three percent of the respondents preferred the use of
electronic record system, while thirty-seven percent favored the use of computer order entry,
and nineteen percent preferred the method of order entry.
The healthcare content continues to change dramatically, despite the constant health
care delivery. A vast majority of healthcare industries continues to deliver, conduct and
manage healthcare information and transaction using file records. Despite the use of file
records, Electronic Health Records is sometimes used. There is a renewed conviction from
the government, the healthcare industries and patients that the use of the Electronic Health
Record is crucial in delivering consistent and quality healthcare (Bethesda: National Center
for Biotechnology Information (US), 2010).
There are various terms used to describe and explain the Electronic Medical Record.
They include automated patient record; an automated health record and computer-centered
patient registers (Ozcan & Kazley, 2007). The Electronic Medical Record, which is a
numerical warehouse of the patient information, can be shared thought all medical
organizations, the patients’ employers, insurance companies and health systems. A typical

registers, choice backing applications, operation processing abilities and integrating with
other systems.
According to Jha et al., 2009), Electronic Medical Record, is an important and
emerging innovation in the healthcare industry. This innovation can integrate crucial and
scattered data into a single document, thus allowing the health administrators to incorporate
evidence-based decision making. The Electronic Medical Record assimilates several tools
which can improve healthcare decisions, hence favoring a safe, efficient and effective
medical care system. Several countries have implemented the Electronic Medical Record
technology. However, the distribution of Electronic Medical Records thought the United
States, has been very sluggish compared to the Netherlands which has the most significant
percentage of countries using the system. Almost ninety percent of the physicians use
Electronic Medical Record in the Netherlands as primary care. However, Canada records the
lowest rate of 7.6 percent in using the technology system, thus underscoring the uncertainty
that the health systems face in deciding how to improve the technology used in healthcare.
Electronic Medical Record is advantageo...
