Why Higher Education Should Be Free
Introduction
Today, in America, the high cost of post-secondary education is one of the leading causes
of college dropouts. Furthermore, it is one of the main reasons that people who would otherwise
go to college, stop at a high school diploma. This trend is worrying for various reasons. For
instance, the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. At first sight, this may seem
unrelated to the issue of college tuition. However, as studies have shown, possessing a college or
university degree means that one is likely to have a better salary than a person having just a high

economy, and further, in ensuring the success of Democracy in America, then higher education,
which is becoming increasingly important in this century, should be free for any qualified
American citizen.

well educated. Indeed, to some extent, higher education remained free for a while for anyone
who was interested in it. However, as en...
