Essentially, training the employees on transition to other work duties and companies presents an opportunity for them to gather skills necessary for the different positions they may hold in the downsizing efforts. According to Alderfer’s ERG theory, employees need a feeling of belonging and growth in the workplace (Salas et al., 2012). The ongoing training will benefit the employees who feel their roles have stagnated by equipping them with a new set of skills applicable after the transition which is imminent in the organization. Further, consistent training will equip employees with skills which may assist them in a new job search incase the downsizing efforts affect them. That way, employees who survive the downsizing exercise will be fixated on achievement due to the motivation that comes with incentives. Further, in the system, more employees will be directing their efforts towards adapting to the new system. Therefore, the incentives will work to make the downsizing transition a success and also benefits the employees.
