History
The culture of Korea dates back to 5000 years ago where the legendary Dangun who is
also believed to be the founder of Korea made an impact on the Korean culture which is felt till
today. Despite the political indifferences between South and North Korea, both nations share the
same roots of the traditional Korean culture. Their difference in political ideologies has a
minimal impact their rich cultural heritage. Korea has diverse religions which are not limited to
Shamanism, Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, and Daoism just to name a few. This paper
explores the culture of Korea from the perspective of their traditional arts, lifestyle and the most
prestigious world heritage sites and renown festivals.
Language
Both North and South Korea share the same language which is considered part of the
Altaic language family. Although there are a variety of dialects, the language is well understood
in South and North Korea. In fact, a total of 65 million people speaks the language with the
majority, 45 million, coming from South Korea (De Mente, 2018). The Korean language is one
of the most articulated and planned language of all times. In Korea, the language is referred to as
Hangul. King Sejong created the first alphabet of the Hangul language in the year 1446 (Clark,
2000). Apparently, the alphabet is one of the easiest to learn, and this explains why Korea has
managed to record one of the highest literacy levels in the world. Recently, more Koreans have
showcased an interest in learning English, and the latter has now been integrated into the
curriculum.

Korea was a colony of Japan from 1910 to 1945 before the Americans took over and
ruled for another three years through their military. Korea gained independence and became a
republic in 1948. Korea developed the first parliamentary system in the August of 1960, and
since then, the nation has maintained this model of governance with the president being the head
of the state. In 1998, the Republic of Korea celebrated their 50th anniversary since the adoption
