PREVENTING MISTAKES AND INFECTIONS OCCURRING IN HOSPITALS
The two major causes of death in most hospitals in America are cancer and heart diseases. This is
because most of these complications are usually chronic hence those affected end up dying. Death
in hospitals could also result from mistakes and infections occurring in hospitals. According to a
research, the number of Americans who die yearly after experiencing a medical hospital-based
error is about 440,000. This ranks medical negligence as the third leading cause of hospital-based
deaths. Apart from mistakes, a good number of patients also end up losing their lives or get
infections during their hospital stay. The estimated number of people who get infected is estimated
to be 722,000 out of which 75,000 patients end up dying (Cohn, Corrigan & Donaldson, 2,000).
Such infections may be caused by simple mistakes like a nurse not washing their hands before
handling a patient. Hospital staff is usually at risk of getting infected by some communicable
diseases if they do not handle patients with communicable properly. Failure to adherence to safety
measures put in place by hospitals may be of fatal consequences to medical staff. Some even end
up losing their lives. It is important to note that as much as most of these mistakes and infections
are to the disadvantage of the patients, they might also end up affecting even the hospital staff.
Some of the common mistakes experienced in health institutions are discussed below.
